Translating Joseph O'Connor

Please join us at a special event with award-winning Irish writer Joseph O'Connor and three of his translators. Elisa Banfi, Carine Chichereau, and Malwina Stopyra, his translators into French, Italian and Polish respectively, will be discussing Joseph's work in translation, in a conversation moderated by Professor Michael Cronin of Trinity College Dublin.

Joseph O’Connor, novelist, screenwriter, playwright, broadcaster and professor, was born in Dublin. He attended UCD before doing postgraduate work at Oxford University and the University of Leeds, and he later worked as a contributor to The Sunday Tribune and Esquire magazine. He is the author of 20 books, including three short story collections and 11novels, among them Star of the Sea (2002), Ghost Light (Dublin One City One Book novel 2011) Shadowplay (Costa Award shortlist 2019), My Father’s House (2023) and The Ghosts of Rome (An Post Irish Book of the Year Award 2025). Among his awards are the Prix Zepter for European Novel of the Year, the Nielsen Bookscan Golden Book Award, France’s Prix Millepages, Italy’s Premio Acerbi, an American Library Association Award and the Irish Pen Award for Outstanding Achievement in Literature. His work has been translated into 40 languages. In 2014, he was appointed Frank McCourt Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Limerick.
