Teatro Grattacielo’s America 250 double bill brings together two profound explorations of freedom — one civic, one personal. Jefferson Lives! examines the birth of a nation through the intimate human struggles behind America’s revolutionary awakening. Puccini’s Suor Angelica turns that lens inward, focusing on a woman shaped by religious and social constraint, and the private cost of survival within it.
Though their worlds differ, both operas illuminate the same essential tension: what it means to seek freedom within systems far larger than ourselves.
An empire tightening its grip; a convent enforcing silence — each becomes the backdrop against which inner conviction is tested.
Together, these works trace the many forms freedom can take, from the forging of political conscience to the moment when suppressed truth can no longer remain contained. In this pairing, the evening unfolds as a journey through the public and private forces that shape human history — and human lives.
