Online, Zoom
Description
Learn about how we’re fighting to end PFAS contamination on farmland!
Join MOFGA on July 25 from 12 to 1 p.m. for an interactive discussion about PFAS and learn about why we’re suing the EPA.
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), or “forever chemicals,” are industrial chemicals that persist in the environment indefinitely. Due to the practice of applying sewage sludge as fertilizer containing PFAS, farmers across the country have been unknowingly contaminating their land, and consequently the food we eat. PFAS contamination takes a huge toll on farmers whose land has been or may soon be affected. Fortunately, there are ways we can mitigate contamination and reduce public health risks to impacted farmers. Since the first courageous farmers began to speak out about PFAS contamination on their farms, MOFGA has been working to “Turn off the PFAS tap” in Maine. In addition to testifying and working with legislators on over a dozen bills in Maine, MOFGA is fighting for the health and safety of farmers and consumers through federal action, suing the EPA for its failure to regulate sludge under the Clean Water Act. MOFGA is joining the lawsuit against the EPA with Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER), an organization that shines the light on improper or illegal government actions, to hold the EPA accountable.
