Description

As the 19th Century John Burns said; The Thames is Liquid History. I also like to think of the Thames as a Giant Liquid Story book! Each time I am on the Thames foreshore, I find myself surrounded by fragments of lives from the past. A little research provides me with a fascinating glimpse into the stories of the people who lost or discarded them. A piece of clay pipe stem with a makers mark, a rusty padlock stamped with a family company name, or a luggage tag bearing the name of a World War One Soldier. Delving into the stories of the real people linked to these found objects brings back to life for a while the Londoners who have come before us. Come and listen to Nicola recount tales of the prisoners on the Woolwich hulks, lost pets of World War 2, World War One Soldiers, and other true stories from the River Thames revealed by the objects she has found washed out by the tide. The talk will be illustrated with a slideshow of photos and pictures, and also a selection of finds to discover after the talk.
