DEEP RISING (Documentary)
Join us for a special screening of the documentary "Deep Rising", hosted by environmental activist Peggy Oki, followed by an engaging Q&A session.
The fate of the planet's last untouched wilderness—the deep ocean—is under threat as a secretive organization plans to permit large-scale extraction of seabed metals to address the world’s energy crisis. Directed by Matthieu Rytz and narrated by Jason Momoa, known for his role in “Aquaman,” this situation raises urgent concerns about the environmental impact of such actions.
“Deep Rising” explores the vital role of our ocean's fragile and mysterious ecosystems. The film presents a gripping narrative of geopolitical, corporate, and scientific intrigue. It exposes the inner workings of the International Seabed Authority (ISA), a little-known United Nations body that oversees nearly half of the planet’s surface on the ocean floor.
As extractive conglomerates shift their investments from oil and gas to deep-ocean mining, *Deep Rising* challenges us to consider why we do not choose to develop abundant resources to meet our increasing energy needs.
Ultimately, Deep Rising underscores that the seabed is the common heritage of humankind and emphasizes the urgent need to make decisions that protect future generations..
