North by North Coast Fall Lecture featuring Chris Maurer

NXNC Returns!

This fall, we extend a warm welcome to Chris Maurer to the AIA Redwood Empire Chapter for our North by North Coast Fall Lecture at the Lavish Experience Center in Healdsburg.

Chris Maurer, architect and founder of redhouse studio, will share his pioneering work using mycelium, the root-like structure of fungi, to grow building materials. Developed through NASA-supported research into habitats for the Moon and Mars, this technology is also being applied to urgent challenges here on Earth.

In Namibia, Maurer’s Mycohab initiative transforms invasive woody biomass into food and mycelium-bound construction blocks. The process supports local economic opportunities while creating affordable building materials from a resource that would otherwise be burned or discarded.

Through projects spanning space exploration, housing, and the reuse of construction waste, Maurer’s work challenges conventional ideas about how buildings are made. His presentation will explore the potential of bio-based materials to reduce embodied carbon, create circular material systems, and move architecture toward a more regenerative future.
