Lecture—At War, At Sea: The Legacy of James Forten as a Revolutionary War Veteran
Tue Mar 5, 2024 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM
Anderson House, 20008
Description
Born a free person of color, James Forten was surrounded by the sights and sounds of transformation in Philadelphia, Pa., throughout the 1770s. He heard the words of the Declaration of Independence read aloud for the first time in 1776, set sail to fight for Independence in 1781, and built upon his coming-of-age in a revolutionary city and his wartime experience to forge himself into a changemaker in Philadelphia and the young United States. Matthew Skic, curator of exhibitions at the Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia, discusses the experiences of James Forten during the Revolution that contributed to his subsequent post-revolutionary roles as a successful businessman, philanthropist, and stalwart abolitionist.
