Legendary punk poet, the loud, warm heart of DIY culture, Attila the Stockbroker brings 40+ years of razor-sharp verse to Southampton.

Attila is the UK’s longest-running, hardest-touring punk poet: a one-man broadside of politics, wit and early-music punk who’s clocked thousands of gigs since 1980, from squats and community halls to Glastonbury’s Cabaret.

Punk’s DIY ethos - especially The Clash’s outspoken socialism - propelled him from bass player in local bands to solo ranter with poems and songs between punk sets. In 1982 John Peel aired him twice on Radio 1; Cherry Red signed him; Melody Maker put him on the cover. That same year fascists smashed his on-stage electric mandolin; he switched to the deeper-voiced mandola, nicknamed “Nelson” (after Nelson Mandela,) and never looked back.

A lifelong Brighton & Hove Albion fan, Attila was central to the 16-year fight to save the club after the Goldstone was flogged off. He became the Albion’s poet-in-residence and, for a time, the home-stadium PA voice, using the tannoy to slip poetry into football, like smuggling veg into a fussy toddler’s dinner.

“Live, he’s “not your average poet”: a night of punk, poetry and pints — accessible, political, funny.” - (Peppermint Iguana, 2025)
