Writing Freedom: A Literary Workshop

Writing Freedom aims to honor public study through self-paced reading comprehension prompts. In this class session, Assata Shakur’s poem "Affirmation" from Assata: An Autobiography (1987) will be used as source material to discuss the relationship between spatial autonomy and worldmaking. This class invites learners to include themselves amongst a consensual canon of Cultural Thought authors. Together, we’re journaling "the magic" while decoding anti-blackness in real time.

About the host:
B Carrie-Yvonne (b. Atlanta, GA. 1997) (they/them) is a gender expansive rainbow poet, visual artist, film photographer, archivist, and educator. Their work explores language of preservation as a restorative strategy that traces Black diasporic knowledge production alongside daily life in the American South. In 2024, Carrie-Yvonne was a cohort member of Highlander: The Movement School’s Southern Memory Workers’ Institute. Through remembrance exercises, ephemera became a creative counter-narrative tool they could relate to there. Carrie-Yvonne has stewarded a micro publishing platform into existence since then. Somatic Press is a labor of love.

🚪 The secondary entrance is through a residential courtyard. Enter through the black metal gate on the side of the Otto's building from the parking lot (at N. Highland and Blue Ridge). Be quiet when leaving events after dark, as this is a residential courtyard. Note this entrance has a few stairs.

♿️ Need no stairs? We got you! Follow the signage from the Otto's parking lot leading you to our back entrance. If you have any issues, please call The Supermarket team (404) 458-1738.

• Limited Parking spots in front of The Shops at Otto's on N. Highland Ave. Must register with ParkMobile. Free for 1 hr before 6pm. Paid after 6pm. (Zone# 3241)
• Small lot beside Otto’s Apartment Hotel at N. Highland and Blue Ridge. Must register with ParkMobile. (Zone# 3240). Do not park in 'resident only' spots.
• Public lot at N. Highland and Ponce (behind and in front of Plaza Theatre). "Scan to Pay" signs. Mon-Sat: 7am-10pm. Free for 15 min. $5 for 1hr, +$1 for each additional.
• Six-story deck at 675 N. Highland Ave NE. $5-$6 for up to 2hr, +$1 for each hr added. $14 daily max.
