The Snow Leopard Trust
The Snow Leopard Trust aims to better understand the endangered snow leopard, and to protect the cat in partnership with the communities that share its habitat.
The Snow Leopard Trust has programmes and staff in China, India, Kirgizstan, Mongolia and Pakistan which collectively contain over 75% of the world’s population of Snow Leopards. In these countries the trust works with local partner organisations, to conduct research, lead community conservation programmes, and negotiate policy decisions with local authority. To protect these endangered cats, the Trust needs to work at a larger landscape level and find ways for snow leopards to co-exist with humans.
The Snow Leopard Trust has equipped and tracked a total of 20 snow leopards with GPS collars, collecting an unprecedented amount of data about the behaviour and ecology of these elusive cats. Furthermore, they have conducted research using camera studies over the years and have subsequently collected the largest library of wild snow leopard photos in the world.
Dr Gustaf Samelieus, Assistant Director of Science at the Snow Leopard Trust will be talking via Zoom about research, the connection with zoos and how the captive population impacts the study of their cousins in the wild.
