JAZZGate: Music of Bill Evans (feat. John Donegan, UK)

Curated by Aengus Hackett Music, the #JAZZGate Series pays tribute to the greatest jazz artists and composers of all time,
as well as featuring local and visiting musicians - the absolute cream of the Irish Jazz scene.

Back by popular demand, for the second time JAZZGate will pay tribute to the legacy of the great Bill Evans.
This is also the first time JAZZGate will feature an international guest, the fabulous John Donegan.

Based in the UK, John Donegan is a modern jazz pianist who writes and plays a selection of standards and originals in the Bebop style with his Trio/Quartet/Quintet. John’s modern jazz has been featured on the BBC, Jazz FM and RTE. After recording a number of programmes for the BBC. In 1997, John recorded his first Album – Song for Ciara – which was the title track and composed for his eldest daughter.
The album received favourable acclaim and was featured on the BBC, Jazz FM RTE and some local Radio stations in the UK,
Ireland and Scotland.
John has also played with Irish greats such as Louis Stewart, Hugh Buckley, Ray Preston, Dave Fleming and Stephen O’Keeffe and from the US, he has, in the past, played in the past with the likes of Art Blakey, Ben Clatworthy, Art Farmer, Barney Kessel, Greg Abate and many more.

John has played at many venues and Festivals in the UK and Ireland and played in France, Portugal and the US, including Birdland in New York.


About Bill Evans:

William John Evans (August 16, 1929 – September 15, 1980) was an American jazz pianist and composer who mostly played in jazz trios. Evans's use of impressionist harmony, inventive interpretation of traditional jazz repertoire, block chords, and trademark rhythmically independent, "singing" melodic lines continue to influence jazz pianists today.

In 1958, Evans joined Miles Davis's sextet, where he was to have a profound influence on generations of future jazz musicians. In 1959, the band, then immersed in modal jazz, recorded Kind of Blue, the best-selling jazz album of all time. During that time, Evans was also playing with Chet Baker for the album Chet.

In late 1959, Evans left the Miles Davis band and began his career as a leader, with bassist Scott LaFaro and drummer Paul Motian, a group which is now regarded as a seminal modern jazz trio.

Many of Evans's compositions, such as "Waltz for Debby", have become standards, played and recorded by many artists. Evans was honored with 31 Grammy nominations and seven awards, and was inducted into the Down Beat Jazz Hall of Fame.
