The Quiet Work - Dogwood Productions
Before permission. Before precedent. She flew when women didn’t. Drove when they shouldn’t.
That'll be Dora. Dora Walker.
When the First World War called, she answered buying an ambulance and steering it straight into danger.
Told to retire by the sea, she chose instead to master it.
Fisher. Skipper. The first woman to command a fishing boat in the North Sea.
Through the mined waters and nights of the Second World War, pistol in her belt, she became the guide everyone trusted.
And that was only the beginning..
A true story of grit, defiance, and also kindness and compassion. A woman who refused the ordinary and inspires the current generation of those who work on or by the sea.
Dogwood Productions’ new show, The Quiet Work will bring remarkable true stories of courage and kindness to the stage. A moving ballad drama, rich with live music and striking puppetry from rising national talents, the production tells how one woman stepped beyond the limits set for her in the early twentieth century.
The drama is devised by Robbie Bellekom, whose work includes Rotterdam (Theater Richtie, Netherlands), Facing The Waves for Dogwood Productions and David Walliams’ Awful Auntie (Birmingham Stage Company UK tour). Robbie was recently Artist-in-Residence at the National Civil War Centre. New music is composed and performed by award-winning folk artist, Clementine Lovell.
The production has been made possible through the generous support of Arts Council England.
