Prevention starts with planning

Fire prevention is far more effective than fire response. Taking simple steps to identify risks, improve security, train staff, and develop emergency plans can significantly reduce the likelihood of a devastating incident occurring in the first place.

Join us for this free online safety talk with Julie Springett, Fire Safety Inspector with Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service, BHS Equestrian Safety Advisor, and well respected Coach and Rider.

Drawing on her 28 years of fire service experience and her extensive involvement in equestrian safety, Julie has helped develop fire safety guidance for horse owners and equestrian businesses across the UK. In this practical and informative session, she will share expert advice on how horse owners, yard managers and equestrian businesses can reduce fire risks, meet their responsibilities and create safer environments for horses and people.

Topics will include:

✅ Legal responsibilities for yard owners, managers and employers
✅ Fire risk assessments and identifying hazards on your premises
✅ Stable, barn and yard layout considerations
✅ Electrical safety and the importance of regular testing
✅ Security measures to reduce the risk of arson and trespass
✅ Good housekeeping and safe storage of hay, bedding, machinery and flammable materials
✅ Fire detection systems and firefighting equipment
✅ Emergency planning for both people and horses
✅ Staff, livery and volunteer training and regular evacuation exercises
✅ What information emergency services need in the event of a fire
✅ Site information boxes, emergency contacts and access arrangements
✅ Preparing for the growing threat of wildfires and extreme weather condition

This session is suitable for yard owners, managers, liveries, coaches, riding centres, equestrian businesses, horse owners and anyone with an interest in equine safety and welfare.

While no one can predict when an emergency may occur, there is a great deal that can be done to reduce the risk and improve preparedness. This seminar will help you understand the practical measures that can be implemented today to better protect your horses, premises, staff and clients tomorrow.

Join us and learn how to make your yard safer before an incident occurs.
