Embassy Court, Icon of 20th Century Modernism - for HODs 2024

Explore the rise of 'modernism' during a guided tour of Embassy Court - one of Brighton's iconic seafront buildings.

Embassy Court was designed by the Canadian engineer and architect, Wells Coates, and completed in 1936. Coates became a hugely influential figure in architecture and design before the Second World War, with the Museum of Modern Art in New York featuring his Brighton project in its seminal 1937 exhibition; Modern Architecture in England.

Embassy Court was a radical construction on many fronts, not least in that it was the first purpose built apartment block in the UK to have top floor flats designated as ‘penthouses’. Our 90 minute tour takes in the stunning views from the 11th floor sun terrace, (where possible, the interior of a flat), the Tank Rooms, where artifacts and a reinstated Wells Coates kitchen are located, and the area behind the building. It also provides the opportunity to view a mural in the hallway and a recently installed blue plaque to a war hero who came to reside in Embassy Court.
