Earwi'GO!: A Retrospective

Description
Earwigs are fascinating insects, but their omnivorous ways and love for nooks and crannies means they can come into conflict with humans, who may not appreciate surprise scuttling or nibbled petals. There remains a lot unknown about these nocturnal garden residents, and the Buzz Club Earwi’GO project aimed to find out more about what we could do to support earwigs, and what roles they may play in our green spaces.
Earwi’GO! ran from 2021 – 2024, focusing on making earwig ‘hotels’ (day time shelters) from easily-available materials. We wanted to see if there was a style of shelter they preferred, and whether we could use portable shelters to move earwigs within a garden – to encourage their potential pest-control provision, and reduce their unwanted nibbling. As is often the case with experiments in the great outdoors, it soon provided to be more complicated than those initial plans!
Join Dr Linda Birkin for the Earwi’GO! retrospective, where our volunteers encounter record heatwaves, slug sabotage, wandering wiglets and the distracting allure of rattan lamps.
