They’ve performed with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Wycliffe Gordon, Cecile McLorin Salvant, Paquito D’Rivera and Wynton Marsalis. They can be heard on the 2014 Grammy-winning soundtrack of HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire” with Vince Giordano’s Nighthawks.
Dec 18, Igor Lipinski: Piano Illusions
Piano Illusions is a unique recital program featuring pianist and magician Igor Lipinski. Originally from Poland, Lipinski first started working on the program of music and magic as an undergraduate piano performance major at the Eastman School of Music. After an inspiring collaboration on the show with Teller of Las Vegas duo Penn & Teller, Lipinski won the WQXR Classical Comedy Contest at Caroline’s on Broadway. In light of his success in New York, he presented Piano Illusions across the world, from Hong Kong to New York City, and performed the show with several U.S. orchestras including Rochester Philharmonic and Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra. As an Assistant Professor of Piano at the University of Oklahoma, Lipinski continues to explore a variety of unconventional and multidisciplinary recital practices to reimagine the traditional format of a piano recital and to think outside of the box about the changing tastes of today’s audience.
Jan 8, Rossano Sportiello
Rossano Sportiello is one of the leading pianists on New York City’s jazz scene. Born in Vivegano, Italy, he began studying piano at the age of nine. He transitioned to jazz at a young age, and by the time he was sixteen he was performing professionally at jazz venues in the Milan area. Rossano, who plays with a relaxed swing, is considered one of the finest “Harlem” stride pianists in the world. The influence of the master jazz pianists, Fats Waller, Teddy Wilson, Art Tatum, Count Basie, Earl Hines and Bill Evans can be heard in his playing. He has performed with many of the world’s finest jazz luminaries and has appeared at well-known New York City venues such as Lincoln Center, the Blue Note, Birdland, Feinstein’s, Carnegie Hall, the Café Caryle, Smalls and Mezzrow. He has performed in more than twenty countries and at acclaimed festivals around the world.
Jan 29, Empire Wild
Empire Wild is a genre-bending, crossover trio founded by Ken Kubota, Brandon Ilaw, and Mitch Lyon. Ken and Mitch bring all the cello has to offer - bowed, plucked, chopped and more. Brandon can be found singing and playing anything he can get his hands on – often a cajon, sometimes a guitar or piano, maybe some ankle bells. All classically trained, the three musicians met at Juilliard and formed Empire Wild as a vehicle for their love of musical exploration - fusing the sounds of pop, folk, Broadway and more into their songwriting and composition. Their debut EP ‘Paper Seasons’ features all original songs, highlighting the trio’s unique sound and instrumentation. Based in NYC, they have brought their signature mix of original music, inventive covers and twists on the classical canon to audiences across the country.
Feb 12 WWII & New York City: Connecting Time and Place
Charles R. Hale’s “WWII and NYC: Connecting Time and Place” recalls the electricity of the wartime home front, while recounting the significant role New York played in the national war effort. The show weaves the era’s vivid personalities, music and stories into an exciting tapestry of a city overcoming the greatest challenge of the twentieth century.
Feb 26, Port Mande: Mark Dover & Jeremy Jordan
Port Mande (formerly Duo Process), is the collaborative partnership between clarinetist Mark Dover of Imani Winds and pianist/producer Jeremy Jordan. The name Port Mande is a play on the linguistic term “portmanteau” – a word blending the sounds and combining the meanings of two others, like the word smog (itself a blend of “smoke” and “fog”). Much like a portmanteau, Dover and Jordan’s artistic partnership is a blend of all of their vast musical influences – both having worked prolifically in classical, jazz, hip hop, gospel, pop, and world music scenes. Port Mande’s mission is to bring all cultures of people together by embracing music of every genre.
