A day of throwing and making with Deiniol Williams, using raw clay, natural sources and inclusions

Join Deiniol Williams in this unique workshop, learning to use aggregates and inclusions in clay. Discover ways of working with additions to your clay and allow those inclusions to alter and change your forms as part of the making process. 

Deiniol is known for his wood-fired forms. Deiniol’s ceramic practice explores the dichotomy between rhythm and discord, balance and disorder. Bringing together raw and unrefined materials and incorporating them into the clay, he seeks to find the harmonious point between the rhythmic flow of the potter’s wheel and the disruptive and chaotic inclusions within the modified clay.

This is a one-day workshop where Deiniol will show students how he creates his unique forms using highly grogged clay. Deiniol will show students how he creates his rough-textured pots using the highly grogged clay and how he manipulates and distorts it to create his unique forms. This course is not about repeating identical forms with perfect smooth profiles; it is about learning to let go and let the material dictate the direction of travel.

Deiniol will cover topics such as preparing the aggregate/additions and how to combine them into the clay, and also how to work with the aggregated material – both throwing and hand-building or a combination of both.

Some experience and competence at throwing will be beneficial.
