🌟Social Studies Teachers🌟
Are you equipped to engage students in discourse around current events and topics that some consider contentious? Can you identify the skills necessary for people to disagree while avoiding the urge to be disagreeable? Are you looking for strategies to help you teach the 2024 election?
Join the Connecticut Democracy Center in residence at Connecticut’s Old State House and the Association for State and Local History (ASCH) for a timely workshop about research-based best practices for engaging students in civil discourse and for teaching relevant topics in today’s world.
This session will be led by three nationally-recognized educators:
Joe Schmidt, author of Civil Discourse: Classroom Conversations for Stronger Communities and Vice President of the National Council for the Social Studies.
Stephen Armstrong, Social Studies Consultant at the State Department of Education, past President of ASCH, past President of the National Council for the Social Studies, and Co-Chair of the Governor's Task Force on Civic Education and Media Literacy.
Allison Norrie, social studies teacher at Fairfield Warde High School and President of ASCH.
Tickets are $20 per person and include lunch and a copy of Joe Schmidt’s book Civil Discourse: Classroom Conversations for Stronger Communities. Free parking is available with validation in State House Square Garage at 55 Market St. in Hartford. Space is limited - secure your spot today!
About the venue: Connecticut’s Old State House is a National Historic Landmark that served as a state capitol from 1796-1878 and Hartford City Hall from 1878-1915. The workshop will be held in the historic Courtroom, the site of Prudence Crandall’s 1834 trial and the Amistad trials of 1839.
