Exploring our Allies & Shadows through Psychodrama and Tarot

Come join us for a day of dialogue with our inner world. Which aspects of our self do we know well & rely on as allies, and which parts of self are unseen, rejected, unconscious or in shadow? Playing with these hidden parts of self can expand our strength and self-knowledge. We will invite our allies in as we welcome parts of our shadow into consciousness and integration.

Our workshop will integrate Psychodrama and Tarot. Psychodrama is an action method (developed in the 1920s by Jacob Moreno in Vienna) in which participants use spontaneous dramatization, role playing, and dramatic self-presentation to engage a situation or encounter. Tarot is a deck of 78 cards in use since the 1400s for inner-character study, divination, guidance and game-playing. In modern times, there are many colorful variations widely used for insight and personal growth.

No experience with Tarot or psychodrama is needed to participate fully in the workshop!

The workshop will use techniques of psychodrama to dramatically activate a Tarot reading. Each participant in the workshop will get a chance to pull a 2-card reading, and then have the group support them in a transformative and spontaneous enactment of their reading. The morning will open with short introductions, warmups, safety agreements, and then conclude with participants doing a 2-card Tarot draw – one for an ally, one for a shadow aspect – and reflecting upon this drawing in small groups. After a short lunch break, the longer afternoon session will consist of each participant having an opportunity to use psychodrama to dialogue with their ally and shadow self. Psychodrama is practiced in a group: a participant volunteers to be the protagonist who then acts on their "drama" with the aid of other group members as auxiliaries. It is a highly structured technique with forms that establish safety, minimize projection, and create the capacity for extremely deep and transformative expression.

Practicals:

Timing: Arrival 9:30-10am / Block 1: 10am-12:30pm / Lunch break: from 12:30-2pm / Block 2: 2-6pm. Participants are required to arrive on time for the morning session to establish safety agreements together. Full day participation is strongly encouraged; please inquire if you need an exception. Bring a lunch or find one nearby, as there are many great options in the neighborhood!

Please bring a Tarot deck if you have one; a few extras will be available if needed.
