Land Justice gathering - North Skye
Fri 4 Oct 2024 11:00 AM - 7:00 PM
Dunvegan Community Hall, IV55 8WA
Description
Join us to explore the history of land resistance in Skye, reimagine what land reform could look like, develop strategies for land struggles in the modern era, and help us build a strong people's movement for land justice in Scotland.
Despite more than two decades of land reform legislation from the Scottish government, the distribution of land ownership in Scotland has only become more unequal. Rural housing is in crisis, crofting faces increasing threats from market pressure, carbon speculation is driving up land prices, and young people and new entrants are struggling to access even small pieces of land to produce food for their local communities. The Scottish Government is working on a new Land Reform bill, but it looks like this legislation will be too weak to bring about any meaningful change whatsoever.
We will meet at 11am at Dunvegan Community Hall, and travel by community bus to two different sites of historical land struggle. At each site we will hear stories from local crofters and historians, and explore the past, present and future of land resistance in the area. We will finish the day back at the hall with a discussion on demands and strategies for land justice.
We encourage you to join us for the whole day if you can, but we recognise that this will be tricky for many folk on a weekday. If you can't make it for the bus tour, we welcome you to join us at 5.30 pm in the community hall for the discussion and planning part of the event.
