We’re really please to have been able to coax a clutch of folk/blues musicians, known collectively as Les Caravans, to The Drewe. We will be treated to solo and duo sets from Sam Grassie and Mataio Austin Dean followed by the full band.
Sam is a fingerstyle guitarist and songwriter from Glasgow, exploring both contemporary and traditional music. His dedication to the guitar owes much to the music of Bert Jansch whilst carving a sound that is his very own. Since releasing his debut EP last year Grassie has been on the road & played with Ryley walker, Iona Zajac & Daisy Rickman.
Mataio is an artist, poet, activist and musician. His Guyanese/English heritage informs his music, as he explains: “I got into Bob Dylan and all his American folk music traditions, but within that, he would be singing English and Scottish folk songs. I just started to think, “Well, what is my kind of folk music? Which music speaks to the history of what I relate to as a person?” And it’s not American folk music. It’s an English thing.”
Inspired by the all-night impromptu format of the legendary 60’s folk clubs, Les Caravanes is a travelling collective comprising some of Britain’s finest singers & instrumentalists. First meeting in London’s Broadside Hacks MOTH nights, the group now features musicians from across the British Isles including Robin Adams (Glasgow), Daisy Rickman (Cornwall), Sam Grassie (Biggar), Rosie Brownhill(Staffordshire), Mataio Austin Dean (Portsmouth), Sam Fryer (Cardiff) & Alfie Jones (London). A planned trip to the edge of the land in Penzance after a sell out European tour got them thinking they could bring their raw take on the road and drop into the Drewe on their way home. An evening with Les Caravans begins with solo performances and descends into a raucous full band performance that rings into the cold night.
Doors at 7.00pm for 7.30pm start. Seated.
