Third Brandwood Memorial Lecture and Christmas Social: Pevsner and Me with Prof Diarmaid MacCulloch

The Ecclesiological Society’s 2025 Brandwood Lecture will be given on Monday 8 December (NB not the 1^st, the date incorrectly given in the summer e-newsletter) by Professor Diarmaid MacCulloch Kt, President of the Society. Entitled ‘Pevsner and Me’, the lecture will recall a lifetime of visiting, enjoying and brooding on church buildings and their significance. Professor MacCulloch will describe those who have influenced him in those experiences, not least Sir Nikolaus Pevsner. One of his personal encounters with Pevsner was particularly important in setting patterns in his thinking, as he will explain.

Diarmaid MacCulloch is Emeritus Professor of the History of the Church at Oxford University, and a Fellow of St Cross College and of Campion Hall. His publications include Thomas Cranmer: A Life (1996), A History of Christianity: The First Three Thousand Years (2009), Thomas Cromwell: A Life (2018) and Lower than the Angels: A History of Sex and Christianity (2024). He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2012.

The lecture will be given at 7.00pm at the church of St James-the-Less, Pimlico. Doors open at 6.30. It will be followed by a pre-Christmas celebration with wine and mince pies (included in the price).
