We are delighted to announce that we are initiating an annual autumn lecture series this year. Each lecture is designed to offer a ‘deep dive’ into a topic, whether this be the fabric of a specific church, the work of a particular architect or an examination of a type of liturgical furnishing. The lectures will be held on Monday evenings between 6.30pm and 7.30pm via Zoom. The link will be sent out shortly before each lecture takes place. The lecture will last between 45-50 minutes and will be followed by 10-15 mins of questions and/or discussion.
Our second lecture will be delivered by Sandy Heslop on the topic of 'The Sculptor-Architects of the Churches of Norwich, c.1300-1450'.
The construction of Norwich Cathedral cloister between about 1300 and 1430 required masons skilled in designing and carving moulded tracery and sculpted roof bosses. As a consequence, three generations of sculptor/architects worked there who were also employed on several of the city’s parish churches. The lecture explores the resulting integration of imagery in those buildings.
Sandy Heslop taught at UEA in Norwich from 1976-2019 and is professor emeritus. He has published widely on English medieval art and architecture. His research interests include churches and castles, figurative imagery in all media, and the creative relationship between makers and their patrons.
