ANNE PIA: A Month O Muins

Celebrate the end of Edinbrugh festival season with a night of Scots poetry with Anne Pia reading from her new collection, A Month O Muins. The event will be chaired by Jay Whittaker, Saltire Award winning poet.

From un mariage á trois, breast feeding kittens, rumpus at the Baptismal font and otherworldly lovemaking; with a whiff of Mozart’s Queen of the Night; faint aromas of Baudelaire; a hint of Dante’s selva oscura and Orpheus who tragically did look back, A Month O Muins Anne Pia’s new poetry collection in Scots is an often humorous, wry, subversive and consistently tender versioning of the poems and songs of the iconic, widely celebrated singer-songwriter, Georges Brassens: the “Bob Dylan or Leonard Cohen of France. 

In this her third poetry collection, she takes inspiration and “courage”from Brassens in order to express her own deeply held views on society, her questioning of its norms and expectations; and the quiet dignity and beauty of originality and challenge to accepted norms;the natural world; the unsung,unoticed and little celebrated,in a world dominated by icons of capitalism, privilege and power.

About the author:
Anne Pia's first book of non-fiction, Language of My Choosing published in 2017 by Luath Press was a Saltire Scottish National Book Awards Finalist for First Book. She was awarded the prestigious Premio Flaiano Linguistico in 2018, and The Crawford Gallery, Cork flash fiction prize in 2021. Anne read in Laziale Italian, French and Scots at the Edinburgh International Book Festival in 2025. She is an Associate of the Centre for Poetic Innovation at St Andrews University and a Member of the Guild of Food Writers. Anne also writes for Bite magazine and plays with the Gullane Ceilidh Band.

Writing within a broadened linguistic context of English, French, Scots and Laziale Italian, her work focuses on migration-related issues, gender, otherness and sexual identities.This her latest collection, honours both her profound attachment and identification with the language, culture and music of France and her rootedness in Scotland.
