Join us for an in person 6 week Counselling Skills course at our Psychotherapy and Training Centre in Hull. This course is delivered by The Ellesmere Centre's Training Team, and covers the following modules:

Week 1: Introduction to Counselling

- What is counselling?

- Historical overview of counselling.

- Differences between counselling, therapy, and other helping professions.

- Limitations of Counselling

Week 2: Basic Skills

- Stages of Counselling (Contracting, establishing rapport, assessment, goal-setting,

interventions, termination).

- Rapport Building

- Active listening Skills

Week 3: Therapeutic Enquiry

- Establishing a therapeutic alliance

- Therapeutic questioning

- Reflective responding and empathy.

Week 4: Therapeutic enquiry continued

- Relationship building

- Awareness Building

- Note taking and recording.

Week 5: Ethics and Ethical Guideline

- Ethical guidelines and codes of conduct

- Informed consent and confidentiality

- Boundaries in the counselling relationship

- Risk assessment

Week 6: Self-Care and Professional Development

- The importance of counsellor self-care

- Managing burnout and compassion fatigue

- Supervision and its importance

- Next steps

Assessment will take place throughout the training. However, the following need to be submitted to gain certification:
- Reflective journal that has been written weekly throughout the training (approx 600 words)
- A 1000 word written assignment about how you will include and develop your counselling skills in relation to your current role.
- Successful completion of a skills practice assessment.
