Frequently Asked Questions

What is colostrum harvesting? Colostrum harvesting — also called antenatal expressing — is the process of hand expressing and collecting your colostrum (your first milk) during pregnancy, usually from around 36 weeks. It can be stored and used to feed your baby in the early hours and days after birth.

When should I start harvesting colostrum? Most women are advised to begin from around 36 weeks of pregnancy, but this can vary. If you have a specific medical reason for harvesting earlier, this will be discussed in your session based on your individual situation.

Is colostrum harvesting safe during pregnancy? For most pregnancies, yes. However, it isn't recommended for everyone — for example, if you have a history of premature labour or placenta praevia. We'll talk through your individual circumstances during the session.

What equipment do I need to collect colostrum? You'll typically use small sterile syringes to collect and store colostrum. These are inexpensive and widely available. We'll cover exactly what you need and where to get it during the session.

What if I can only express very little — or nothing at all? This is completely normal and doesn't mean anything is wrong. Even tiny amounts of colostrum are enormously valuable. The session will help you get the most from your expressing and reassure you every step of the way.

What happens to colostrum if I don't end up using it? You never need to throw colostrum away. There are several ways it can still be used after birth — we'll cover all of your options so nothing goes to waste.

Do I need to have been told to harvest colostrum to book this? No. Many mums book simply because they want to be as prepared as possible. You don't need a medical referral — just the desire to feel ready.
