Workshop: Triangles - Working with Young People at Risk
Fri 20 Jun 2025 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM AEST
Online, Zoom
Description
This workshop will explore a key Bowen Family Systems Theory Concept of emotional triangles particularly as they emerge in the context of working with young people at risk of self harm and death by suicide.
The workshop will outline some basic principles pertaining to the notion of emotional triangles, considering not only the predictable triangles within the presenting family, but also the triangles that involve the treating clinician/s and the wider system. There will be observations of the predictable ways triangles can intensify alongside increasing fear and worry both in the family and treating system, as well as considering the impact of this increasing intensity on symptom presentation and treatment efficacy.
Participants will have an opportunity to apply theory to practice via engagement with a clinical vignette, exploring the relevance of this theoretical concept for clinicians working with suicidal youth and their families and its application to clinical work.
The workshop will consider various principles that can guide clinicians in navigating these triangles in a clinical context which is often highly anxiety inducing.
