This workshop provides a way to understand family violence as an aspect of broad emotional processes in families and society. The workshop will focus on the challenges of applying Bowen family systems theory in public and private practice settings.

First Hour - Understanding how violence emerges in family emotional processes

Second Hour - Using Bowen theory to guide designing and implementing public and private services that promote better family functioning.

Third hour - Discussion and questions


About Dr Walter Smith

Walter Smith is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, and has a primary interest in applying Bowen theory to family violence, child abuse and organizational functioning. He is a licensed psychologist and a graduate of the Georgetown Family Center’s Post Graduate Program in Family Theory and Family Psychotherapy. Dr. Smith is a founder of Western Pennslylvania Family Center. He is former executive director of Family Resources, a child abuse treatment and prevention organization in Pittsburgh, and is a frequent national and international lecturer.
