Kalu & the Electric Joint (11p)

Kalu and the Electric Joint blend the powers of psychedelic soul music with the driving beat of rock and roll and the ancient rhythms of Africa. Born in Nigeria, Kalu relocated to Austin, Texas, where he put together a stellar ensemble of players who graciously fuel and follow his deep well of eclectic influences. The group’s new record, Time Undone is a sonic masterpiece of original tunes with a positive message and soul-stirring beats. The arrangements are masterfully crafted allowing the songs to breathe and flow. From the first note, these musicians show that they’re prepared to carry modern music forward while still paying tribute to the inspirations of their past. Their music invokes a wide range of emotions while influencing with an uplifting message through masterful playing. Opening for acts like George Clinton & The Parliament Funkadelic, Vieux Farka Toure, Allen Stone, Keller Williams amongst many others, this band comes to play and when they do, the dance floor never stays empty.

Fat Tony (10p)

Somewhere between DJ Screw and Bad Brains, De La Soul and Scritti Politti sits Houston’s native son, Fat Tony. For the last decade, Anthony Lawson Jude Ifeanyichukwu Obiawunaotu has been everywhere: from star-making turns on the first A$AP Rocky mixtape to hosting shows on Viceland and Super Deluxe, to co-founding a DIY culture magazine to playing every worthwhile rap party in America and burning the stage down every single time. A singular and experimentally-minded rap artist adept at both traditional regional styles and indie pop, hardcore thrash and melodic candy-painted bangers. He is punk in the platonic sense of the word: experimental and subversive, but also funny, whimsical, and virtuosic.

Lucas/Heaven (9p)

Lucas Gorham has long been a fixture in the electronic music movement and beat scene community. As Heaven The Dude, he’s worked with Fat Tony and Dent May on the cheeky yet sincere ode to the direct deposit, “Waiting For A Check.” He teamed up with Tony for 10,000 Hours, giving the Houston MC a country-rap sound without it ever sounding gimmicky or forced. Slide guitar and sick bars have never sounded so good together. But sometime in the past few years, Gorham was moving further away from his personas as Heaven The Dude and HevIn, instead wanting to create something truer to the name he was born with. That album turned out to be Blues of the World, which Gorham is dropping under the name Lucas/Heaven. It’s an album of striking honesty, desperation, and optimism, blended into a sound that combines the urgent poetics of Gil Scott-Heron with the undeniable rhythms of jazz stars like Makaya McCraven. In short, it’s a triumph, built from Gorham’s decades-long journey to finding his most authentic self in music.

Mad Whit (8p)

Mad Whit is a spiraling force of sound often described as Art-Rock, Jazz-Pop, and Soul-Math from Austin, TX. Songs are filled with swift movement, jangly, shiny guitar tones, angular syncopations and polyrhythms iced with soaring, acrobatic vocal melodies.
