About The Book Club
The Feminist Book Club is a monthly book club run by The Feminist Bookshop in Brighton. We meet on the last Wednesday of each month (unless otherwise stated) in-person at the bookshop. The in-person discussion is only open to subscribers. They will receive a code with their book that allows them to sign up to the book club on this page.
Doors open at 6.50pm for a 7pm start. There will be soft drinks available and you are welcome to BYOB.
This Month
This month, as many people are off on adventures for the summer, our thoughts, too, turn to travel, and to travel writing.
Our chosen read, A Flat Place, is A love letter to Britain's breathtaking flatlands. It is also a reckoning with the painful, hidden histories they contain. Noreen Masud has always loved flat landscapes - They reflect her inner world: the 'flat place' she carries inside herself as a consequence of childhood trauma. But as much as Britain's landscapes provide solace for her suffering, they are also uneasy places for a Scottish-Pakistani woman, representing both an inheritance and a dispossession.
Guiding Principles for Book Clubs at The Feminist Bookshop
Our aim for the book club is to offer a welcoming, open space for everyone. It is intended as a space where we can discuss difficult topics and share our different views and experiences respectfully. Read more on this link.
Accessibility
Access to our shop is through a large door (91cm wide) and a ramp (77W x 48L x 12H with 240kg max weight) can be placed for wheelchair access. If you require assistance or the ramp to enter the shop, please ring the doorbell that is located on the right hand side of the front door and one of our staff will come and help you.
Our chair dimensions are the following:
Width - 40 cm
Depth - 41 cm
Legs height - 47 cm
Back of the chair height - 30 cm
Our gender-neutral toilet is located on the basement level, which sadly due to structural restrictions, is not wheelchair accessible. The basement is accessed via 10 stairs with a handrail on the right hand side. We have on-site baby changing facilities in our bathroom.
If you'd like to familiarise yourself with the space beforehand, you can find photos of the space on our website.
