How Scotland Dressed the World: Lynne Coleman and Avril Mair
“With her twin passion for rich history and modernity, Lynne Coleman is a global champion of Scottish fashion via every medium imaginable.” - The Herald
From Grace Kelly in her Pringle of Scotland twinset to Cher and Dionne tartan-twinning in Clueless, How Scotland Dressed the World is a love letter to the nation that gives us the blueprint for international style.
In this talk at the Festival of Fashion, Scottish fashion expert Lynne Coleman explores the country’s rich cultural impact on the modern world. Weaving the tales of textiles that span continents and feature throughout political and economic movements, she will explore the impact of Scotland on global fashion - from ‘gallus’ and ‘peely-wally’, to ‘tartan-punk’ and Ralph Lauren’s ‘preppy chic’.
Coleman is an author, textile historian and broadcaster with two decades of experience across the British textile and luxury industries. Her work centres on Scottish textiles, British knitwear, and the craftsmanship, people and places behind them. For a decade, she was Brand Guardian for DC Dalgliesh, one of Scotland’s oldest artisan tartan mills. In 2024, Lynne founded L Y N N E, a British luxury knitwear brand working with specialist mills and artisans across Scotland and the British Isles.
Mair holds the prestigious position of Fashion, Watches & Jewellery Director across both Harper’s Bazaar and Elle UK. A prominent Scottish fashion journalist, Mair is known for her sharp editorial eye and pragmatic style guidance, having spent over three decades shaping British print and digital fashion media.
