Derbyshire, Ashbourne, Wild Food Foraging Course/Walk
Fri 18 Oct 2024 12:00 PM - 3:30 PM BST
Tissington Estate, DE6 1RA
Description
The stunning Tissington Estate is situated a few miles outside Ashbourne in The Peak District. Its tranquil surroundings offer a wonderful environment in which to learn about wild edible plants and mushrooms.
Blessed with an abundance of natural springs, its waters were believed to be the reason why the village escaped the plague in the later half of the 1600s.
With various route options available, the route of the walk could take in meadows, streams and woodland trails, or part of Tissington Hall's private gardens and woodland.
This foraging course walk is easy to reach of Derby, Ashbourne, Bakewell, Buxton, Stoke-on-Trent, Stockport, Macclesfield and Great Manchester.
When we meet up, we will go through the basics of foraging before heading out to discover the wild food in the area.
The course includes:
- an overview of foraging laws and safety best practice
- advice on sustainable and mindful practice
- exploration of the venue introduction to a number of edible species
- instruction on how to tell edible species apart from poisonous lookalikes
- information on where to find these species again
- recipe ideas
- wild food treat/s to sample
- digital information sheet sent after the course
Samples of tasty wild food treat/s could include soups, pestos, salts, pickles, syrups, cordials, jams, jellies, leathers, vinegars, and preserves. All are either 100% plant/fungi-based or have a 100% plant/fungi-based alternative.

This is an educational course, there is no harvesting during the course. Samples are picked for identification purposes only.
We cannot guarantee what species will be growing on any given course date - this is the nature of foraging. As a rough guide, springtime and summer courses should be predominantly plant focused, with mushrooms sometimes found. Summer courses may also have fruits and flowers to learn about, with some mushrooms. Autumn courses should be more mushroom-focused than spring or summer courses but this is dependant on weather conditions preceding the course.
