April’s Fox Den talk will be an exploration and discussion around consent using Betty Martin's Wheel of Consent as a framework.
Betty Martin’s Wheel of Consent is a powerful embodied consent practice which distinguishes between the ‘doing’ aspect of an interaction: who is doing? - and the ‘gift’ aspect: who is it for? Asking these two questions together creates four dynamics or ‘quadrants’, each of which feels different in the body and requires a different type of consent agreement to be made. This is the central insight of the Wheel of Consent, from which many insights and consequences flow.
Betty developed the Wheel through her experience as a sex-worker, supporting her clients to identify and communicate which kinds of touch they didn’t want, and which kinds of touch would give them the most profound pleasure. It was only later that she realised the four quadrants of the Wheel also illuminate and clarify interactions in all areas of life.
In conversation with Foxy will be Rupert James Alison – director of the Art of Consent and an accredited Wheel of Consent facilitator. Rupert has trained in depth with many internationally renowned teachers of intimacy, relationship, communication and consent. He has been holding space for groups since 1992 and has facilitated consent workshops in the UK and in Europe for over a decade, including workshops for students at Cambridge University.
