9:30am – 4:30pm | Full-day course with guided fungus foray
Join experienced mycologist Clifford for a fascinating and practical introduction to fungi identification. With 38 years’ experience, over 200 fungus forays led, and 130+ identification courses delivered, Clifford is a Fellow of the Linnean Society of London, a member of the British Mycological Society, and a former mycological consultant to the Horniman Museum.
This accessible one-day course combines classroom learning with a guided fungus foray, giving participants both theory and hands-on experience.
What You’ll Learn
- The main nutritional groups of fungi
- Basidiomycetes and ascomycetes
- Key identification features (gills, caps, rings, stems, volvas)
- How to make a spore print
- How to use a simple key for gilled fungi
- How to record fungi using a Fungus Recording Sheet
- Fungi habitats and ecological roles
Guided Fungus Foray
A gentle walk through the Cemetery Park to observe and identify fungi in situ.
Hand lenses (10–15× magnification) recommended.
Course Handout (Included)
All participants receive a 19-page illustrated handout covering identification features, spore prints, recording methods, glossary, classification, and recommended books and websites.

- Format: Indoor teaching + outdoor fungus foray
- Bring: Packed lunch, suitable outdoor clothing, hand lens (optional but recommended)

If you’re cycling, please note that bikes must be secured outside the Lodge; we cannot offer indoor storage.

A red brick building directly in front of you as you enter via the main gates on Southern Grove, E3 4PX. Nearest Tube is Mile End
On the Day
Please arrive on time and head to the meeting point at the Cemetery Park Lodge.
Accessibility Information
We aim to make our walks as inclusive as possible.

Total distance: 1–2 km

Paths: 1–2 m wide, mostly hard-packed crushed concrete fine or earth.

Some off-path areas may be uneven.

A full circular route is approx. 1 km with one steeper slope and several shallow slopes.

Two areas include steps, but these can be avoided.

Benches with backs are available throughout the site.

Some areas offer shade.

On-street parking on Southern Grove is unrestricted on weekends.

With advance arrangement, motorised vehicle access can be provided for mobility needs.

BSL or other interpretation can be arranged with at least 2 weeks’ notice (subject to availability).

Toilets available; no adult changing table or hoist.

Baby changing and a private space for breastfeeding can be provided.

A private space for prayer can be arranged on request.
