Join to celebrate the wonderful Carlin Pea on Carlin 'Wednesday!'
This small, brown, drying pea reputedly saved the people of the north-east from starvation when Newcastle was under siege from the Scots in 1644. For many years, this was celebrated on the fifth Sunday of Christian Lent, when northerners would eat the hot peas with salt and vinegar.
We're reviving this tradition with an afternoon of pea-themed fun, starting with an exploration of Carlin Sunday memories, and an opportunity to find out more about this tasty and important food crop. We've samples of Carlin Peas dishes to try and the Healthy Cooking team at Middlesbrough Environment City, Les and Kim, will demonstrate how to make a selection of tasty treats.
Plant your own Carlin Peas to take home with you and pick up a packet of seeds to share too.
And we've left plenty of space for meeting other growers and food enthusiasts too!
Tickets are strictly limited. If you book and can no longer make it, please do let us know so we can reallocate your space.
The Meeting Room at MEC is fully accessible, and although there is ample car parking on site, we urge you to consider sustainable options if possible.
Please let us know if you experience any food allergies, and make us aware on the day too.
This event is a collaborative activity between the Gaia Foundation's Seed Sovereignty Programme and Middlesbrough Environment City and is part of the Northern Pulse Collaboration.
