ABOUT US
The Greenhouse is the UK’s first zero-waste theatre. We use the power of performance and storytelling to create climate action amongst artists and audience members, through brilliant shows, exciting social events, and inspiring creative spaces. We’re perhaps most well-known for our pop-up performance venue, The Greenhouse, a theatre space built completely from found and recycled materials, but we’re also dedicated to helping the whole industry work greener. Which is why we’re introducing our Carbon Literacy course, harnessing our years of experience making sustainable theatre to help other theatre makers reduce their environmental impact!
ABOUT THE COURSE
Our course is split in to four modules, each taking about two hours. We’ll deliver the course over 2 sessions, each lasting about 4 and a half hours. For this course, the sessions will take place on Wednesday 11th September and Wednesday 25th September, 2pm to 6:30pm.
Module 1 – General Carbon Knowledge + The Theatre Green Book
Our first module starts with context. You’ll learn about the different greenhouse gases, emissions in general, and how your work impacts your emissions. Then, we’ll focus in on the Theatre Green Book, giving you an overview of the current industry standards for reducing waste and emissions.
Module 2 – Hands-On Planning
In the second module, we’ll introduce you to the key challenges facing the performing arts in terms of carbon emissions and wider sustainability. We’ll focus on emissions, materials, transport, and creative content. For each of these, we’ll outline the main challenges, and give examples of best practice in each area. Then, we’ll invite you to work in a group to build and create project that showcases industry best practice!
INTERVAL
Between the two sessions, we’ll take an optional trip to see a performance that is demonstrating high quality environmental practice, so you can see the work in action! NOTE - tickets for this are not included in the price of the course
Module 3 – Carbon Foot-printing and Waste Assessments
For our third module, you’ll learn all about keeping track of your impact as you work! We’ll start with waste assessments, and you’ll have the chance to create a worked example using the Theatre Green Book’s industry standard. Then, we’ll repeat the process with Carbon Footprinting, so you’ll be confident in understanding and reporting the impact of you work!
Module 4 – Making Change and Communication
We’ll spend our final session talking about how best to communicate you climate commitments, as an individual or organisation. We’ll also delve into routes of encouraging climate action from others. Finally, we’ll discuss examples of good, achievable climate commitments for people working in the theatre industry. You’ll be invited to set one commitment for yourself, and one for a group of which you are a part.
Once you’ve made your commitments, we’ll submit all the course materials to the Carbon Literacy Trust. They’ll review and assess you work, and if successful, they’ll issue you with an official Carbon Literacy certification!
