Description
This months Jazz Club will be featuring Andy Crowdy on double bass, Jez Cook on Guitar and Ollie Weston on Saxophone.
Jez Cook has been active on the British jazz scene since the 1980s and is an accomplished guitarist on acoustic and electric instruments.
Initially drawn to the sounds of rock he became interested in jazz and began listening to guitarists of all eras including Django Reinhardt, Wes Montgomery, John Scofield and Pat Metheny.
A long association with Ian Cruickshank led to performances at the Django festival in France and with leading hot club players.
Since then he has appeared with Jacqui Dankworth, Alan Barnes, John Etheridge, Chris Garrick, Gary Potter, Julian Stringle, Diz Disley, Angelo Debarre and East European group Dunajska Kapelye. He has been a member of violinist Ben Holder’s various groups for well over a decade.Since graduating from the Leeds College of Music (BA hons) and the Guildhall School of Music (Post Graduate Diploma in Performance) Ollie Weston has established a busy and varied career. As a Saxophonist, he has performed in live and studio settings with artists as diverse as Amy Winehouse, Tim Minchin, Bonobo, Frank Turner, The London Jazz Orchestra, The Hackney Colliery Band, The Ambient Jazz Ensemble and The Nelson Riddle Orchestra.
Also working in the studio and theatre settings with performances on many West End and touring shows including Chicago, Dream Girls, Songs For Nobodies and two critically acclaimed seasons at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre.
Currently the course leader for the Jazz department at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama (junior school) I run Jazz ensembles, Big Band and theory classes. I have written a series of ‘Exploring Jazz’ books for Schott Music that are published worldwide and feature on exam syllabus in the UK.
