The Magic of Foraging: Reclaiming Intimacy with the Land
Summary
This talk explores how foraging can be both a practical and magical practice - one that deepens our intimacy with the land, sharpens our ecological awareness, and roots us more fully in place. Drawing on my work as a green witch and urban naturalist, I’ll speak about how sensory attention, ritual, and seasonal noticing transform ordinary encounters with plants into powerful relationships. We’ll look at foraging as a pathway to reciprocity, enchantment, personal resilience, and a more grounded way of living within our local ecosystems - whether we’re in forests, fields, or the heart of a city.
About Lynn
Inspired by the resilience and wisdom of wild urban plants, Lynn Shore believes that herbs have the power to heal not only people but also communities and landscapes. A Medical Herbalist, educator, and writer, she works to reconnect people with the green world around them – even in the heart of the city.
Originally from Bristol, Lynn grew up on the edge of the countryside, where she spent her childhood foraging hedgerows and observing the life teeming in fields. That early curiosity about nature led to a degree in genetics, a short career in genome research, and then to teaching biology – before her lifelong passion for herbs drew her fully into herbal medicine and nature-based healing.
Lynn holds a Master of Public Health (MPH) from the University of Liverpool, where she focused on Urban Food Security. Following this, she established Urban Herbology to help people rediscover urban nature through foraging walks, crafting workshops, and courses. She also runs Mugwort and Marigold, a therapeutic herbal practice in Amsterdam, and tends the River of Herbs orchards, foraging gardens where everyone can connect with the city’s wild plants.
Lynn has trained widely in herbalism and ecological living, studying Wise Woman Herbalism with Susun Weed and Glennie Kindred, Permaculture with Patrick Whitefield and Permaculture Visions, and Social and Therapeutic Horticulture with Thrive. She qualified as a Medical Herbalist with Heartwood, and also holds Dutch qualifications in herbal medicine, stress management, and depression coaching.
Her first book, The Green City Witch (Aeon, 2025), celebrates the magic of urban nature and offers a grounded, empowering guide to living in harmony with local plants. She took part in the Wildbiome 2 research project, living entirely on locally foraged foods to explore the impact of wild nutrition on health – an adventure she will repeat in 2026.
A passionate advocate for edible landscapes, herbal self-care, and community green spaces, Lynn also helps preserve the everyday herbal wisdom once common among city communities and families, including her own ancestors who worked the mines of Leeds. She shares her knowledge through workshops, talks, and writing, and is a member of the Herb Society, Herbalists Without Borders, the Association of Foragers, the Herboristen Gilde, and the Complementary Medical Association.
As a trustee of The Herb Society, Lynn aims to inspire others to weave herbs into their everyday lives, strengthening the bond between people, plants, and place.
Speaker 2: Kirsten Hartvig

Creating a Healing Herb Garden using No-Dig and Biodynamic Methods
Summary
No-dig gardening is marshal arts for gardeners, and the biodynamic principles acknowledge the effects of sun and moon, and the rest of the universe, on our health and our cycles. Once you get used to doing and not doing certain things at certain times, you get into a relaxed and respectful flow that is in tune with nature. To start a herb garden using these principles, you need seeds or plug plants, a greenhouse or a window sill, mulching materials, time, and patience.
We will talk about which herbs to have in your starter kit and where to get them, how to harvest them, and what to use them for.
About Kirsten
Kirsten Hartvig ND, MNIMH, DipPhyt trained at the School of Herbal Medicine, Tunbridge Wells, and the College of Naturopathy and Osteopathy in London. She is an acclaimed nutritionist, medical herbalist, and registered naturopath, but first and foremost a herb and food lover!
She is also a keen cook, inspired by Hilda Leyel, to create meals and recipes from the starting point of what is available in the garden or fresh from the shops, rather than putting the menu first. Food is the foundation for good health and wellbeing.

She also writes columns and articles for various newsletters and magazines, and she teaches Nature Cure diploma courses with Dr Nic Rowley, leads monthly herb walks and workshops on natural health and herbal medicine.

Kirsten has taught nutrition and dietetics at the European School of Osteopathy and the Scottish School of Herbal Medicine Master’s degree course, and materia medica on the Heartwood Professional Course. Kirsten is director of the Healing Garden at Arc Hall in West Sussex.
