This Black History Month, join us for an evening celebrating the extraordinary life and legacy of Paul Robeson — actor, singer, activist and one of the most remarkable voices of the 20th century.

Robeson performed in Eastbourne at least nine times between 1929 and 1939, including appearances at the Winter Garden. His connection with the town was a significant part of his remarkable performing career. In 1938, around 2,000 people gathered at the Winter Garden Floral room to hear him sing, with many more reportedly unable to get in.

A pioneering actor on stage and screen, and an internationally acclaimed bass-baritone, Robeson used his extraordinary voice not simply to entertain, but to speak for racial equality, workers' rights, peace and social justice. His activism brought him into conflict with the political establishment of his time, but he remained committed to his principles.

LOVE ROBESON celebrates the whole man — his music, his acting, his activism and his extraordinary connection with Eastbourne.

A special Eastbourne connection

Just four days later, on Sunday 25 October 2026 at 3pm, a commemorative plaque for Paul Robeson will be unveiled at the Winter Garden, Eastbourne, marking his remarkable connection with the town.
