How to Start the Deeper Conversation
Most people know they want their conversations to go deeper.
They have a friend they’ve known for years and still feel like something is missing. A family member they can’t quite get to. A coworker they’d like to know better but every conversation somehow ends up in the same place. The relationship is good. But it stays at the surface. And they don’t know why.
It’s almost never a courage problem. It’s a skill problem. Not knowing what move to make next. Not knowing how to read whether someone is ready to go further. Not knowing what question opens a door without forcing anyone through it.
This session is about that move. One shift in how you listen, one question you ask differently, and something that has been stuck starts to unstick.
If any of these land, this session is for you!

“The question that changes a conversation is almost never the one you planned to ask.” Chris | Equipping Live, October |
The felt tension that brought you here:
- You have a relationship that’s been stuck at the surface for longer than you’d like to admit
- You want to go deeper with people but you’re not sure how to get there without forcing it
- You’ve tried to have a meaningful conversation and it didn’t go the way you hoped, and you’re not sure what went wrong
- You work with people, lead people, or care for people and you want your conversations to actually matter
- You’ve taken an Equipping class and want to keep the practice going between sessions
Not for: People looking for scripts or formulas. This is not a conversation technique class. It’s a formation session about how to be present enough with another person that something real can happen. There’s a difference.
What to Expect
An hour that changes what happens in your next conversation.
|
01 |
Teach Why conversations stall at the surface, what’s actually happening when a conversation can’t seem to go deeper, and the one shift that changes it. |
|
02 |
Practice You won’t just hear about it. We’ll practice live. You’ll leave with one specific thing to try in a real conversation this week. |
|
03 |
Questions Bring your real ones. The relationship that keeps stalling. The conversation you don’t know how to start. That’s what Q&A is for. |
Equipping Live is a conversation with people working on the same things you are, led by someone who has had more surface-level conversations than he’d like to admit and is still learning how to go deeper.
You don’t have to be a natural at this for it to matter.
Your Host
Chris Conlin
Chris is the Executive Director of Equipping Ministries International, a 50-year-old relational discipleship organization that has worked with over 750,000 people across 120+ countries. He has spent years studying why relationships stay at the surface and what it actually takes to change that.
He leads EMI’s monthly class series in Cincinnati alongside his wife Victoria and hosts The Human Project podcast.
He will probably tell you about a conversation he handled badly before he tells you what to do instead.
What’s Next
If this session resonates, two options for going deeper:
- Renewing Your Mind | In Person | October 10 - the course that gets underneath why we think the way we do and how to change it
- Conflict to Connection | In Person | November 14 - because deeper conversations eventually get hard, and this is how you stay in them
