"The Provincialisation of Ancient History, or an Enlightenment Tragedy" - The 10th Annual Sir Jeremy Morse Lecture

Please join us at the IGRCT in the Peel Lecture Theatre, School of Geographical Sciences, at 5pm on the 23rd of April for our 10th Annual Sir Jeremy Morse Lecture, delivered by Professor Josephine Quinn. The lecture will also be livestreamed. 

Ancient History was both hugely popular in the early eighteenth century and understood in a very broad geographical sense. By the early nineteenth century it belonged to Greece and Rome, and had become the preserve of the wealthy and well-educated. What happened, and whose fault was it?

Josephine Quinn is Professor of Ancient History at the University of Cambridge. She studied at the University of Oxford and UC Berkeley, and then taught Ancient History at Oxford for 20 years before moving to Cambridge in 2025. Her books include In Search of the Phoenicians (2018) and How the World Made the West (2024).

The lecture will be followed by a Q&A and a free drinks reception in the Hepple Room downstairs. All are welcome.
