curated concert experience that highlights the LEGENDS of
FUNK, with some of San Diego’s most accomplished musicians.
On this special night, we'll be honoring one of the most iconic
artists of our time, the Queen of Soul, Ms. Aretha Franklin! Led by
Ricky G (of Karl Denson's Tiny Universe), and joined by the
incomparable Daneen Wilburn on vocals, the band features an all
star cast of musicians from the funk, jazz and gospel worlds,
joining forces to give you the funkiest vibes since the Summer of
’69!
A New York transplant, Ricky G came up playing guitar with San
Diego based funk groups (Surefire Soul Ensemble, B*Side
Players) before ultimately landing with legendary saxophonist and
hometown hero Karl Denson of The Rolling Stones. Fresh off a
JazzFest run in New Orleans with Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe,
Ricky returned to San Diego with the inspiration to start a series
of curated concert experiences. He’s had the opportunity to
perform with a number of legendary funk and rock artists through
his career, including, Robert Randolph, Ivan Neville, George
Porter Jr. (The Meters/Dr. John) Chuck Leavell (Rolling Stones/
Allman Brothers/George Harrison/Eric Clapton/John Mayer),
Bernard Fowler (Rolling Stones/Herbie Hancock), Daniel Ponder,
and Adam Deitch (Lettuce/John Scofield) to name a few. I’ve also
worked closely with Grammy Award Winning Producer Kamau
Kenyatta (Gregory Porter-Liquid Spirit/Take Me to the Alley).
Ricky approaches every artistic situation with reverence and
respect for those who’ve laid the path before him, and for this
reason he’s become one of San Diego most beloved musicians in
the live concert circuit. @rickyg_______
Daneen Wilburn is a legendary gospel, jazz, and R&B singer from
San Diego. Her self titled debut album, produced by two-time
Grammy Winner Kamau Kenyatta, has received international
acclaim, and her latest single features an all star cast of
musicians including studio legend Paul Jackson Jr. A queen of
San Diego, she was asked by the San Diego Padres to sing at the
memorial service of baseball legend Tony Gwynn. Before 25,000
fans at Petco Park and a national television audience, she
performed a version of Amazing Grace that silenced the
spellbound crowd. @daneenwilburn
Chris Stillwell is one of the most respected bass players of the
last 30+ years. As a founding member of The Greyboy All-Stars,
he crafted his expertise in all things 60’s Soul, and paved a way
for countless funk acts in the jam band scene to follow. He’s
recorded and toured with legends like Jackson Browne, Karl
Denson, Robert Walter, and Stanton Moore to name a few. A true
craftsmen of vintage tone and feel, there’s no one in SoCal who
pays as much reverence and respect to the legends of soul music
like Stillwell.
Jake Najor is a Grammy Winning San Diego drummer who
specializes in old school funk and soul music. He has recorded
and/or toured with an incredible range of high profile artists
including TV on the Radio, Big Daddy Kane, Jason Mraz,
Redman, Empire of the Sun, Raphael Saadiq, Karl Denson,
Breakestra, De La Soul, Aloe Blacc and many more. He currently
leads his own group, Jake Najor and the Moment of Truth, and
has backed Big Daddy Kane with Surefire Soul Ensemble through
this summer.
Kevin Lum is a recent San Diego resident, who played keyboards
with legendary ska outfit, The English Beat, for 10 years. Since
moving to SD, he’s also played with local groups including
Shakedown String Band, and has proved to be an integral piece
of all of Ricky G’s concerts in San Diego.
