Fresh off his debut at the 45th Annual Detroit International Jazz Festival, Kahlil Childs returns to San Diego and is thrilled to feature his wonderful quartet of young players at the Jazz Lounge. The band will play a modern repertoire including originals from Childs—along with pieces from groundbreaking players from modern jazz to hip-hop including Immanuel Wilkins, Ambrose Akinmusire, and Kendrick Lamar. This is the first engagement of this group at The Jazz Lounge and is a show definitely not to be missed!
Kahlil Childs (Alto Saxophone) – Kahlil Childs is a 15-year-old multi-reedist from San Diego California. Along with leading his own combo, he is also a member of the Rob Thorsen Quartet which features some of the finest professional musicians in San Diego. He plays alto, soprano, tenor, and baritone saxophones as well as bass clarinet and flute. He currently studies with Charles McPherson -- a Detroit legend, and one of the greatest living masters of the alto saxophone. He also studies with Grammy award winning musician & producer Kamau Kenyatta (another Detroit legend). Kahlil is a featured player in the Young Lions Jazz Conservatory under the directorship of renowned trumpeter Gilbert Castellanos. He was recently honored to be named as a member of the J.C. Heard High School All-Star Band with which he performed at the recent 45th Annual Detroit International Jazz Festival.Malik Minert (Piano) – Malik is a talented, 15 year-old piano player, composer, and featured performer in award-winning San Diego jazz programs, including the Young Lions Jazz Conservatory and Mission Bay High School's Preservationists. He has played with top San Diego musicians such as Gilbert Castellanos and studies with Grammy Award winning pianist, saxophonist, and producer, Kamau Kenyatta. He has also appeared at some of the top venues of jazz performance in San Diego including the Rady Shell at Jacobs Park and Dizzy's Jazz Club. Through his original compositions, Malik has developed an innovative sound, blending modern harmonic concepts with a deep sense of lyricism. Most recently, Malik was recognized for his leadership and deep dedication to jazz, receiving the 2024-25 merit-based Jeff Clayton Memorial Scholarship Award.
Luke Little (Bass) – Luke Little is a highly sought after bassist from San Diego. Adept at both upright and electric bass, he has played at prestigious events such as the 2023 San Diego Music Awards and 2024’s Jazz on Tap Festival. A former student of the Young Lions Jazz Conservatory, Luke has been mentored by Gilbert Castellanos, and has studied with first call San Diego bassist, Rob Thorsen. Luke has performed with some of the most accomplished professional musicians in the San Diego jazz scene, and will be studying with Brian Levy and Luca Alemanno in the jazz program at San Diego State University.
Zollie Wariner (Drums) – Zollie Wariner is a 15 year-old drummer with a unique rhythmic approach from San Diego. He plays in the Young Lions Jazz Conservatory. As a member of the Kahlil Childs Quartet Zollie has been featured at Dizzy’s Jazz Club and other great venues throughout the San Diego area and in Los Angeles. He studies with Grammy Award winning pianist, saxophonist, and producer, Kamau Kenyatta and first-call drummer, Richard Sellers.
