The Business of Legal Writing: How to Save Time and Get Better Results. A live online course with Judith Raphaely
Fri 27 Sep 2024 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM BST
Online, Zoom
Description
Whatever your role or level, you spend a lot of your time at work writing … emails, advice, reports, articles, transactional documents and more. Technology means you send (and receive) more words every day, putting more pressure on everyone’s time and also reducing attention spans.
Lawyers are busy and the readers of their output are busy. Writing well is more important for individuals than it has ever been. But in a fast-changing context we need to think differently – and unlearn – how we learned to write, and especially what “writing well” means. All professionals "can" write. Legal material is complex, so we focus on what we write, but when was the last time you stopped to think about how you write?
This is a course for every level; writing is one of the first opportunities for juniors to impress, and the more senior we get the more writing we get and the more re-writing we do.
This course is for you if you write in English, whether as your first, only, or an additional language.
This course gives you a new approach, with lots of practical tips applied to examples you write and see every day. You’ll leave with a structure and guidelines you can use immediately to save time and improve your results.
Judith Raphaely qualified as a solicitor with Freshfields during a career in the legal sector spanning over 25 years, the last 15 in learning & development. Her expertise and passion is delivering courses that allow you to make – and enjoy making - small changes with big impact. Her sessions are fun and challenging, practical and interesting, impressive and relatable, and lively and relaxed. She is currently a non-practising solicitor.
Judith specialises in training writing/drafting because it is a gateway skill that impacts everything for lawyers. It underlies inspiring confidence, persuading and influencing, business development, client care, commercial approach, effective problem-solving, managing others, and is key to your personal impact and professional brand.
Price: £195 + VAT for the first delegate. This is a per organisation price, so up to 10 of your colleagues from the same organization can participate at absolutely no extra charge, even if they are viewing it from a different location. So, of course, if there are 10 of you the cost per delegate would be just £19.50 each.
For smaller organisations with 4 or less partners, or sole practitioners, the price is £99, which is for a single place with no additional free places
This course considers and challenges in a new way why and how you write, and makes that highly relevant to your work. We’ll focus on lots of practical tips applied to examples you write and see every day, and you’ll leave with a structure and guidelines you can use immediately to save time and improve your results. We will cover:
What is legal writing – a competency, a skill, or something more?
What legal writing has to do with business and how that challenges lawyers.
How to re-focus legal writing on results and results on readers.
How to get the results you want, increase your personal impact and write to inspire confidence in your individual and firm brand,
Plain and other prejudices: sounding smart and how lawyers’ education and training means we often approach writing upside down.
Writing in SPACE – what stops us, and how we can start. Most of the course will apply a new approach and framework to examples delegates are surprised to recognise from their everyday writing. We’ll explore:
- Short sentences
- Put points positively – with first things first
- Aim to be active – almost always
- Cut words you can – four limbs
- Everyday English – the ultimate sophistication
What Others Have Said
“The most useful training session I have done in years. It put structure around themes I have been pursuing with my team for years, and it resonated with them too; we are suggesting improvements to each other ever since!” (Managing Partner)
“Everyone in the firm should attend this course.” (Practice Group Head)
“Judith’s sessions are highly engaging (and fun) and have huge impact, and she is great at getting - even very senior - people to realise they may still have something to learn about writing. We’ve used her for new trainees, whole offices, and partners (who particularly enjoy some robust debate). People at all levels come to the sessions unsure they need to be there and leave asking for more! …" (Director of Development and Culture)
“I learned a lot from Judith’s courses that still helps me every day. The content is so relevant to how we communicate with clients and colleagues and includes practical examples that everyone could benefit from addressing. We often think we're great at writing, but Judith's approach and style made things we overlook seem obvious - and easy to change. If you get a chance to do one of Judith’s courses, grab it with both hands! (Senior Associate)
“Judith is an excellent trainer in all things to do with professional writing. Her courses are expertly constructed and delivered. She has superb materials and her years of training experience show in the training room (or online!). Her background as a lawyer makes her courses convincing and credible. Would highly recommend.” (Head of Learning & Development)
