HMRC Corporate Investigations, Thursday 2 July. Presented by Jeremy Mindell
This practical course looks at HMRC investigations from a purely corporate standpoint. It is designed for advisers who act for companies facing HMRC scrutiny, whether in the form of an aspect enquiry, a risk review, a compliance check or a full investigation
Corporate tax investigations can involve a wide range of alleged underpayments and compliance failures, including corporation tax, VAT, employment taxes, employers’ National Insurance, interest deductions, research and development claims, transfer pricing and profit fragmentation. The financial exposure can be significant, but so too can the management time, disruption and reputational risk involved.
The course will examine how HMRC identifies and risk-rates companies, how it decides whether to open an aspect review or a wider investigation, and the behaviours and risk indicators that are currently attracting HMRC attention.
Delegates will be taken through the practical conduct of a corporate investigation, including how to respond to HMRC at the outset, how to manage requests for information and documents, how to keep control of the process, and how to avoid unnecessary escalation. The session will also consider how to deal with HMRC in a cost-effective and efficient manner while protecting the company’s position.
The emphasis throughout will be on practical advice: understanding HMRC’s approach, identifying the real areas of risk, managing the investigation strategically, and helping corporate clients reach the best achievable outcome.
