Dealing with Problem Clients: Handling Pressure, Complaints and Unrealistic Demands
Law firm clients have become increasingly willing to complain. Some complaints are justified, but many arise from misunderstanding, unrealistic expectations, poor communication, delay, cost concerns, or a client’s belief that the firm should have achieved an outcome that was never realistically available.
This problem is now becoming more difficult because clients can use AI tools to produce long, detailed and “legal-looking” complaints within minutes. Even where the complaint is weak, inaccurate or based on a misunderstanding, the firm still has to respond properly, calmly and in accordance with its regulatory obligations.
For law firms, the challenge is not simply dealing with the complaint once it arrives. The real issue is how to reduce the risk of complaints arising in the first place, how to manage difficult clients before matters escalate, and how to protect the firm if a client later challenges the advice, the costs, the service or the outcome.
This practical 2-hour live online course will examine how firms can deal more effectively with problem clients, unrealistic demands, pressure tactics and complaints. It will consider the warning signs that a client relationship may become difficult, the importance of setting expectations clearly, and the practical steps firms can take to reduce the risk of complaints, regulatory problems and professional indemnity exposure.
The session will include examples from a range of practice areas and will focus on practical risk management for solicitors, fee earners, support staff, supervisors and compliance teams.
Delegates will have the opportunity to ask questions throughout this live and interactive course.
The course will cover:
· Why do clients complain?
· What are the most common complaints against law firms?
· What are the regulators telling us?
· What is the view of the LSB?
· What can firms do in the face of AI challenges?
· What about your T&Cs?
· What about your front-line staff?
· Practical ways to mitigate complaints
· Impact of the move to the FCA of AML regulation
