Leadership Skills for Law Firm Associates. Presented by Tony Reiss

Thursday, 22 October 2026, 10-11.30 AM

"Being a technically excellent lawyer does not automatically make someone an effective leader."

As associates become more senior, they are increasingly expected to supervise junior lawyers, delegate work effectively, motivate colleagues, manage matters efficiently and provide constructive feedback. Yet few receive any formal training in these essential leadership skills.

This practical 90-minute masterclass, presented by Tony Reiss, will provide associates with practical techniques they can apply immediately to become more effective leaders, supervisors and matter managers.

Who Should Attend?

This masterclass is designed for:

  • Mid-level associates
  • Senior associates
  • Managing associates
  • Newly promoted legal managers
  • Lawyers preparing for partnership
  • Anyone supervising junior lawyers or trainees

Topics covered:

· Delegation/Supervision skills

· Motivation

· Project Management

· Feedback skills

Delegation/Supervision skills

Your firm has hired good people – if they give you poor quality work, might it be because of how you delegated it? We'll cover the pitfalls in managing others and how to avoid them.

If you’re supervising all your team members in the same way, you may be making a mistake. Tony will explain the different styles you should be adopting for different circumstances.

Motivation

We tend to assume that other people are the same as us when it comes to what motivates and them – this is unlikely to true. Tonywill summarise the key theories and provide some tips on motivation and how to avoid demotivating your team members.

They’ll be some pre-work in which you can assess what motivates (and potentially demotivates) you.

Matter Management

Having transitioned from a junior to a mid-level or senior associate, you now should have a role in supporting your partners in managing matters effectively and efficiently. Your partners potentially have better things to do with their time, so they can add more value.

We’ll explore what is important for the client and the firm and what tasks to focus on at the start, middle and end of matters. You’ll receive a useful checklist.

Feedback

It’s so important to help others learn, so give feedback! Gen Z lawyers seem to be particularly demanding in terms of getting feedback, and rightly so! This part will help participants be clear about how to give effective feedback together with a demonstration of an effective feedback discussion.
