Anneli Howard
Anneli is a solicitor and barrister at Monckton Chambers. *She has been successfully appointed as a silk from March 2021 in the 2020 competition. She is also a recognised Thought Leader on Brexit and International Trade issues. A former Référendaire at the European Court of Justice, she has expert insight of the interaction between EU, ECHR, international and domestic law across a range of sectors. Rhodri Thompson QC
Rhodri is a leading silk in UK and EU regulatory law. He specialises in competition law, telecoms law and all aspects of EU law. Rhodri’s expertise in the overlapping areas of EU law, competition and regulatory law is reflected in his regular involvement in major telecoms, utilities and media-related cases before Ofcom, ORR, the CAT and in the UK and EU Courts, most recently in the 2019 Rail Franchise Litigation in the TCC. Rhodri provides advice and advocacy at all stages of competition and regulatory disputes, including preliminary strategic advice, advice and advocacy during the administrative stage of regulatory investigations, appeals, judicial review and commercial litigation. He is currently Hon Treasurer of the UK Association of European Law and Chair of the EU Law Committee of the Bar Council.
Fergus Randolph QC
Fergus is at the forefront of EU and competition law litigation at the English bar. He regularly appears before the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU), General Court, all divisions of the High Court and the Competition Appeal Tribunal. He has been a member of the Bar Council Brexit/Future Relations committee and has been in regular discussions with civil servants on the Brexit transition and the eventual Trade and Cooperation Agreement agreed at the end of 2021. He has written extensively on those arrangements and will continue to contribute his thoughts on the TCA.
Fergus is a full member of the Brussels bar and as such is entitled to advise and represent clients on matters of EU law before the EU Commission and the EU Courts in Luxembourg.
Prior to practising at the London bar, Fergus spent 15 years in Brussels including time at the European Commission
Adrian Berry
Adrian’s practice spans a range of inter-related public law areas concerning citizenship, immigration, human rights, international protection, and social assistance. He acts across the field of public law, providing advice and advocacy and practises in Courts and Tribunals at all levels from the First-tier Tribunal and County Court, through to the Senior Courts and the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) A list of some of his notable cases is set out below. He is available at short notice for urgent work and where injunctions and other interim relief may be required He writes a blog on migration, citizenship, and free movement called Cosmopolis. He also has a blog on Nationality and Citizenship law. Adrian acts for individuals, communities, and NGOs and international organisations. He also acts as a consultant to NGOs and international organisations, to assist with strategic litigation, analyses and reports of immigration and nationality law and practice, and actions plans for reform. He is widely known, not just for his casework, but also for his policy work and contribution to debates on immigration and nationality law.
George Peretz QC
George’s practice covers a wide range of public law, regulatory and tax issues, with particular strengths in competition and State aid, pharmaceuticals, VAT and customs/trade remedies, and agriculture. George has recently won a number of major cases in the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal, European Court of Justice and General Court and regularly leads in the senior English courts as well as in specialist tribunals. Until he took silk in 2015, George had for many years been a member of the Attorney General’s Panels, including the A panel from 2009, in which capacity he advised and represented the UK Government on a wide range of major EU and public law cases. George is Joint Chair of the Joint Working Party of UK Bars and Law Societies on Competition Law and Joint Convenor of the UK State Aid Law Association. He was also from 2017-2019 General Rapporteur of the Ligue Internationale du Droit de la Concurrence. George has written widely on Brexit-related legal issues, ranging from articles in the European State Aid Law Quarterly to pieces in the Guardian and Prospect magazine and contributing to BBC Radio 4 documentaries. He has given oral and written evidence to the House of Lords EU Committee on State aid post-Brexit, to the House of Commons International Trade Select Committee on trade remedies after Brexit, and to the House of Commons Brexit Select Committee on level playing field commitments. He advised a number of MPs on issues relating to the “Common Market 2.0” proposal for a “soft” Brexit. He also comments on Brexit developments and other legal matters on Twitter (@GeorgePeretzQC).
Valentina Sloane QC
Valentina is a leading barrister in EU relations, procurement and tax law, including VAT, excise and customs duties. Prior to taking silk, Valentina was named Tax Junior of the Year at the Chambers Bar Awards 2018. Who’s Who Legal UK Bar recognised her as one of the “Most Highly Regarded” juniors in Government Contracts, as well as one of the foremost tax juniors in the country. Valentina was previously a member of the Attorney General’s A Panel and has wide-ranging public law and judicial review expertise.
Dr Carl Baudenbacher
Carl has enjoyed a distinguished career as a judge, university professor, arbitrator, consultant, author of legal and political publications, political advisor and speaker, in recent years with a particular emphasis on the legal implications of Brexit. A Swiss national, Carl was the Liechtenstein Judge of the EFTA Court from 1995 and served as the Court’s President from 15 January 2003 to 31 December 2017. He has advised members of HM Government and HM Shadow Government, members of both Houses of Parliament, the First Ministers of Wales and Scotland, members of the Irish Government and of the Government of Northern Ireland. He has furthermore given evidence to the House of Lords EU Justice Sub-Committee and to the House of Commons‘ Exiting the European Union Committee. From 1987 to 2013, Carl held the Chair of Private, Commercial and Economic Law at the University of St. Gallen (Switzerland). Between 1993 and 2005 Carl taught European and International Law as a Permanent Visiting Professor at the University of Texas School of Law. In 2015, 2016 and 2017 Basler Zeitung named him as one of Switzerland’s most influential thinkers. In 2019 he became the first non-EU lawyer to be made an honorary member of the European Lawyers’ Union (U.A.E.). He is the author or editor of over 40 books and has written over 250 articles. His research activities encompass Swiss, European and International business and economic law. Carl resigned from the EFTA Court bench on 09 April 2018 and joined Monckton Chambers. He is focusing on both the Continent and United Kingdom across the full spectrum of EEA/EU law, and involves consulting, litigation strategy, arbitration and speaking engagements.
