This half day online Food Law conference will be streamed live, direct to your desktop so you can watch it from your office or home. The price for this is £210. This is a per organisation price, so up to 20 of your colleagues can participate at no extra charge, even if they are viewing it from a different location or at a different time. The whole conference will be recorded so you have a choice of watching it live or recorded, or a mixture of both.

Although food law is country-specific, the way food law is applied in practice is more universal. In addition to the UK and Ireland, the conference will be relevant to delegates in other jurisdictions who are interested in how food law applies and particularly with those involved with exporting to the UK.

This is streets ahead of an ordinary passive webinar experience with one or two speakers, which would get very tedious very quickly. We have 7 speakers. With this online conference, you will be able to participate with as many colleagues as you want - either live, or in segments (perhaps viewing it a session at a time over several days/weeks) or on an on-demand, recorded basis. You will be able to take part by video or audio from your office or home.

We have been putting together online conferences for over a year (and face-to-face conferences for almost 25 years) and have fine tuned the product to reassure ourselves that, as a concept it works, and sitting in front of a screen was not too big an ask for delegates. It works extremely well, and is as far removed from the boring and dull old one hour webinar as it is possible to be.

Please note: if you are booking more than say 14 delegates, it is probably better to make two bookings of half the number of delegates each, starting with the paying delegate and then adding half the free delegates to that booking and then creating a new booking for the rest of the free delegates. The reason for this is that the booking platform time-out kicks in perhaps too quickly and you can loose all the information you inputted.

Speakers:

Miles Bennett, of 5 Paper Buildings is instructed to prosecute by many local authorities both as leading junior and junior counsel. Cases range from multi-million-pound ticket fraud to product safety, and Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulation cases. Miles has considerable experience in advising and prosecuting multi jurisdiction/authority cases. Miles was instructed as leading junior by the OFT/CMA in the first ever Pyramid Promotional Scheme case under the CPUTR’S involving a £21 Million loss to consumers and advised the ODA in relation to their powers on seizure and prosecution for the 2012 London Olympics. He is regularly instructed by local authorities in Unfair Trading and Counterfeit Goods cases. Miles successfully represented Suffolk County Council in The Court of Appeal against a company and director involved in aggressive commercial practices and unfair trading. Miles was instructed to advise a local authority and the DVSA in a criminal investigation into a major car manufacturer and serious product safety issues. Sterling Crew is Chair of the Advisory Board of the Food Authenticity Network of the Laboratory of the Government Chemist. He is co-founder of Kitchen Conversation. Managing Director of SQS Ltd and is a Strategic Advisor at Dynamic Risk Indicator and the Shield Safety Group . Sterling is the Independent Scientific Advisor at Campden BRI and sits on its board. He is also on the audit governance board at Eurofins. He chairs the Institute of Food Science and Technology's Food Safety Group and is its immediate past Vice President. He has 35 years’ experience of working in the field of national and international food safety, governance, communication, sustainability and regulation. He started his career in government before a successful track history in retailing with Marks and Spencer and Tesco. He has also worked in the branded environment for Coca Cola and Disney and two food manufacturers. Sterling’s experience as a regulator, retailer, brand owner and food manufacturer has given him a unique perspective of the challenges of allergen management.

Iain Ferriss is a lecturer at the University of Birmingham and specialises in food safety and food standards legislation. He is course lead on the Higher Certificate in Food Control which provides the academic learning for prospective food enforcement officers. Iain joined the University of Birmingham in 2017 after a 15 year career with South Gloucestershire Council. During his career as an enforcement officer, he was lead for Food Standards and member of the FSA's Food Standards Focus Group. He holds a Masters in Food Law issued by De Montfort University.

Sarah Howarth is a food industry professional with more than 35 years’ experience in Retail and Food Manufacturing. Her experience spans across UK and Europe working for a range of food businesses including Unilever, M&S, PepsiCo Restaurants/Yum Brands, Cargill, Cott Corporation and Express Dairies. She offers a wealth of knowledge throughout the supply chain with her core focus on food safety, regulatory compliance and quality management. She is a member of IFST Scientific Committee and IFST Food Safety Special Interest Group.

Sam Jennings is a Director of Berry Ottaway & Associates Ltd, Chair of the IFST Food Regulatory Group and Technical Adviser to the Council for Responsible Nutrition UK. She provides advice to industry and regulators globally on technical, scientific, and associated European regulatory aspects within the food industry, particularly in relation to food/dietary supplements and functional food products (e.g. weight control and sports products). She has presented to governments and industry worldwide on topics including stability of food supplements, EU food law, GMP and other technical issues. She also runs tailored workshops for companies on EU food law, claims and other relevant topics as required.

Pete Martin is Regulatory Director of Ashbury. For 30 years he has worked in trading law as a technical service provider to grocery retailers. His background covers both food and non-food products where he specialises in providing support and advice, auditing, and information sharing on compliance and due diligence. He works to protect brands and their consumers by helping clients innovate within the lines of the law.

Jonathan Underhill is a member of 3PB Barristers. He is a specialist criminal and regulatory practitioner, who both defends and prosecutes individuals and companies across a range of complex regulatory matters. His practice has a particular emphasis on breaches of consumer protection, local authority and trading standards enforcement and environmental legislation (encompassing Fraud and Confiscation proceedings).
He has acted for individuals and companies in matters concerning the Food Safety Act, and associated Food Health and Hygiene Regulations. Recently he has provided advice and representation concerning Food Condemnation Proceedings, the Novel Food Regulations, and their applicability to SARM’s following the National Food Crime Units classification of such as a Novel Food for the purposes of enforcement. He has also provided advice in relation to the classification, registration and enforcement relating to CBD products within the Novel food regulatory framework.

Terms of booking

1. Payment of delegate fees for attendance is required before the date of the conference, otherwise attendance may be refused

2. Replacement delegates are permitted at any time but if they are too close to the conference date, the change may not be reflected in the list of delegates

3. We operate a no cancellation policy. The only exception is in relation to demonstrable ill-health on the day of the conference. Notwithstanding this we may, at our discretion, offer a credit for the whole or part of the delegate fee paid to be used either towards the costs of a future conference or other event or in-house training
