The Macedonian Society of Great Britain is thrilled to present:

Big Bang: A Forgotten Cultural Boom in Greece, 1970-1973
An illustrated lecture by Professor Stathis Kalyvas
Wednesday 22 October, 7.00 pm at The Hellenic Centre, in London

The Colonel’s dictatorship in Greece (1967-1974) is commonly regarded as a period of political as well as cultural repression, leading to societal silence and retreat. Yet, between 1970 and 1973, cultural life in Greece experienced an unexpected flourishing. Books, music, cinema, theatre and the visual arts were produced and consumed in striking quality and quantity, creating a true cultural “Big Bang moment”.

In this illustrated lecture Professor Stathis Kalyvas will explore how such creativity emerged under an authoritarian regime and why this remarkable moment has since faded from collective memory.

A wine reception will follow the lecture.

We kindly encourage attendees to join us in person for this special event.

For those unable to attend in person, the event will be streamed live and can be accessed through the following links:
